Excessive air pollution is a fact we have to learn to live with. Air quality meters are warning us too often that we are in the red and maybe it is better not to leave the house. However, we cannot be indoors all the time, actually, the question is how safe we are there as well. In that way, air filters become some of the most necessary household items, as they have been in industrial production for decades. Some experts, with a tinge of irony and dejection, predict that people who used to gather around hearths will in the near future do the same thing around an air or water filter, which is to become the most important part of any space. Anyway, not a day goes by without some new air purifying device or product appearing on the market, which you can tell by the advertising calls and knocking on your doors. And so filters are one of the most dynamic and fastest growing markets.
Air filter – what stops the finest particles?
Sponge air filters are widely used in everyday life and industry, as they are present in home appliances, air conditioning devices, furniture, automotive and healthcare industry, computer equipment and so on. They come in sheets, tapes, balls, rollers, rolls, cast foam and various others adapted forms. Some of those sponges are used in air filtering, as well as protection from the of dust, its removal and absorption.
Polyurethane sponge filter foams on the base ester are ideal for dust and air filters (HVAC), as well as for use in current generators and vacuum cleaners. The material is light and has an open-cell structure that may vary from a fine one to a quite rough one, depending on the number pores per inch (PPI).
The pore thickness of these filters usually ranges from 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 80 to 100 PPI. The “tens” will stop only coarse particles, those of 30 and above will stop finer ones, while the “hundreds” stop everything. In addition to absorbing harmful substances and gases, those air filters are good as fire retardants and mold dryers.
Air filter in combat against polluter
When there are no volcanoes around, and we are lucky that the dust rarely reaches us, the main air polluter are humans. The combustion of fossil fuels (in traffic and warming up houses), various technological processes (chemical, mechanical, construction industry, thermal and others industries), release huge amounts of harmful matter into the environment. Carbon monoxide (between 70 and 90 percent of total emissions are due to transport), carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, oxides nitrogen, hydrocarbons, are only some of a whole host of harmful substances.
Top air purifiers can purge completely, or at least 99 percent of all those dangerous substances that would get into your lungs!
What are the actual sizes? It should be clarified that a micron is a millionth of a meter, so there are 10,000 microns in one centimeter, while the standard for air purification is only 0.3 microns. Above that, high-end purifiers cannot pass quality testing, but many of them retain particles many times smaller than 0.3 microns.
The most popular types of air filters
- • Wair purifier with water filter – reduces the quantity of unwanted impurity and refreshes the air. They are also known as air humidifiers.
- • HEPA filters – the most popular for maintenance of air quality, the HEPA filter does not let almost anything through.
- • filters with UV light - effective in eliminating viruses and bacteria.
- • filters with active carbon (carbon filters) - suitable for neutralizing tobacco smoke and various other household odors.
- • air purifiers with ionizers – they allow unwanted particles to fall to the surface and thus disappear from the air.
Water filters save money
Water filters have a long service life, a very high ability to collect liquids and harmful substances, and are resistant to moisture. They can be washed and do not lose their quality, which significantly saves the household budget. In addition, they are resistant to heat. They are often used in swimming pools, aquariums, cisterns, for air filtration and various other things. Sponge filter foams, based on ether, are ideal for filtering water. The cross-linked and flexible PUR sponge filter is a polyether-based foam, and usually comes with pore sizes of 10, 20, 30, 45, 60, 80 and 100 PPI.
When to change the air filter?
HVAC devices, i.e. air conditioners or heating and ventilation systems that contain filters, must be changed or washed depending on whether they are intended for single or multiple use. Especially, because those systems are usually connected to public institutions where a very large number of people or a sensitive part of our population reside; such as schools, hospitals and nursing homes. The approximate period of time for replacing the filter or washing it can be from six to 36 months. Detailed instructions on when to replace the filter are best found in the manual of the device itself. The most important thing is not to neglect this habit, because the systems that purify our air, if they are full of dust and dirt, become our enemy, which can cause us health problems.
Reason enough to buy an air filter?
This dilemma seems to be sadly behind us. Every house, especially in urban areas, should have a filter that will make their breathing easier and healthier. The investment, if you choose certain products, may not be small, but it is necessary. Especially for people who suffer from allergens, who are sensitive to chemicals, have asthma, are bothered by dust, dander, hair, pet odors and smoke. It should also be mentioned that not all air purifiers are designed to filter all types of pollutants, so a combination of some is even desirable.
